i've been m.i.a. lately, franticly cutting at my drafting table for months and finally the toronto and montreal mapcuts on white are complete! these two pieces will be a part of the paperwork in 3d exhibit at the shelburne museum in shelburne, vermont. this is my first real museum exhibit so if you're in vermont stop by and see these beauties.

i often get asked, "what is the best way to frame the city prints?". the 11"x14" city prints are easily framed in any standard mat+frame for an 11"x14" opening, (the frames used in my images are from michael's craft store and target). the diptych prints are best framed without a mat to allow the image to continue, as shown in the photo above. also, many customers are afraid to mix the 1 panel prints with the diptychs but together they can create an interesting city print wall to remember the places you've lived or your favorite cities. the city prints are also a great gift for a newly wed couple celebrating where each is from and where they reside together. if a certain city is not yet in my shop, please contact me regarding a custom order for an original.

the stretched canvas prints are gorgeous. these do not need any framing and pair beautifully with each other or can be mixed with framed city prints as well. i change the prints on my studio walls often and i'll try to post some more framing ideas.

a list of F.A.Q.

1. do you do custom cities?

yes, of course but i can only take custom requests for the ORIGINAL INK DRAWINGS ($160 for a 11"x14" 1 panel and $275 for a diptych panel set) and for the hand cut maps. in order to reserve, i require an initial payment of 1/2 to place your item in line and then the final 1/2+shipping is due once your item is fully complete. completion dates for custom pieces vary depending upon my current schedule. if you are interested in reserving a piece, please send me an email.

2. do you have a city print of (insert your city here)?

there is a search feature on etsy. once in my shop, just type the city you are interested in the search box at the top. all city prints are listed, some originals are not, please inquire if the original you are interested in is not listed. new cities are continually added and news of any new cities is updated on my facebook page, become a friend and keep updated with the newest cities.

3. how do you frame the mapcuts?

please see this post.

4. are these cut by hand or cut with a machine?

all of my mapcuts are cut by hand with an x-acto blade. it's a tedious process but A LOT of love goes into them. see this link for more details.

5. do you offer framing for the city prints?

no, unfortunately, i do not have frames in stock and for sale. but standard frames are very easy to find. michael's craft store and target have great frames with mats included.

6. can i get a larger print of (insert your city here)?

yes, maybe. this depends on the city. just send me an email with the city of interest and the desired size.

san francisco, i must admit some people get very irate about the neighborhoods that are included in this art piece so i am writing to clarify. although, i fully enjoy the city and all aspects of a city life, i am NOT a "downtown-ist" or only trying to depict the "yuppie neighborhoods". sometimes people assume and wrongly accuse others, in the case of art, relationships and in life in general. so, perhaps, it is better not to assume especially when you do not know me or know fully about my artwork. this piece as in all of my pieces was created based on overall composition. i enjoy how the negative space of the water contrasts the tiny street grids and for a piece to be held by 2 monumental bridges, structures of our time, puts emphasize on the architecture and engineering that fills each city and reveals the quiet strength that these delicate pieces hold. AND for the neighborhoods that are not included in this piece....it simply is a very large sheet of paper, 30" in length x 22" in height. it's the largest sheet that i am working with and only so many streets and areas will fit. if your neighborhood is not included, don't take it personal. if you would like a certain area mapped, i do take custom requests but please remember, i'm not a cartographer, i'm an artist!

your friends might not know which city this is but if you've been there or lived there, then you certainly will recognize this city grid from any other. if you look closely, barcelona has a unique city block, with a 45 degree angle at each intersection creating a wider, more interested space. i hope to get back there someday to see the sagrada familia when it's completely finished.

the city prints are professionally printed in black ink on a white cotton canvas and then gallery wrapped on wooden stretcher frames. a protective coating is applied to the canvas for protection against humidity, fingerprints, etc. these come ready to hang, no framing necessary. perfect for the modern home, and easy to send as a gift for others. the canvas prints are gorgeous. i have a few hanging in my studio and my husband has a dublin canvas print in his office at work.

framing advice for mapcuts

a larger seattle mapcut on white is now available. during the photo shoot today we were able to capture the shadow, which i'm just thrilled about. when the mapcuts are hung and lite properly they cast an amazing shadow, sort-of a hidden treat. what is the best way to frame these? i often suggest sandwiching the mapcut between 2 pieces of plexi-glass with a standoff post that allows the piece to be hung about 3-4" from the wall. a standard floating frame also works well for the smaller mapcuts. or a custom frame, similar to the one shown here can also be used. in the baltimore piece, the mapcut is floating over a piece of stretched canvas, this is also how my mapcuts in the cosmopolitian hotel are framed. since the shadows are so amazing, it's worth the extra money to make sure the pieces are framed correctly.

hello philadelphia and welcome to the hand cut map collection! i heart philly! maybe because i grew up in central pennsylvania and took many trips to philadelphia or maybe since philadelphia is so cool it is often considered the 6th borough of nyc, or mostly because it's a city with deep historic roots. roots which are evident in it's strong grid and city planning by william penn. franklin square, logan circle, rittenhouse square, washington square, and centre square define what a public gathering space should be and create the city of philadelphia. these historic squares are emphasized and revealed more beautifully in this modern map without text and clutter of typical maps.

even on a perfect fall day

i found the most perfect brick wall in the NoDa district of charlotte, north carolina and have decided this is my wall. the mapcuts will look amazing with this as their background. it has so much character and traces of art and color from previous projects. but even with the perfect background and on a perfect fall day with clear blue skies these mapcuts are hard to photograph. the size of them makes them awkard to hold and i wish humans had a built-in leveling device within our arms, so the paper would always be perfectly straight. and then just a slight breeze interrupts a shot and makes us hold our breath hoping that it will not tear or damage the hours and hours of time spent on each piece. several hours later, all five mapcuts were photographed and un-damaged and we could breathe again! see my flickr page for all of the photos and if you're not a contact already, add me as a flickr friend.

london is by far the hardest city for me to cut. the streets are tiny, the blocks are not square and the patterns are more random than any other city that i've encountered. these aspects make for a beautiful piece of artwork though. there is so much detail in this piece. i love how the thames river carves its way through south london.

i've been to london twice. each time, i wish i had more time to explore the city and there's always hope for another trip.

i get so many requests for custom pieces that include a specific address or a town that is quite small. at first, i was very reluctant to take such small orders because my work and my interests are completely centered around the aspect of the city. although, now i am enjoying the abstract images of these small towns. this piece is saluda, north carolina. the overall dimensions of this piece is 10"x10" and the field of cuts within is 7"x7". i will be offering custom personalized mapcuts at my etsy shop soon, just in time for the holidays!

baltimore mapcut on white

the baltimore mapcut on white is now available for custom orders. this piece is cut from white bristol paper (acid-free, heavy-weight, 100 lb., smooth surface). 18" length x 24" height, can easily be framed.

i grew up in central pennsylvania. we often took weekend trips to the inner harbor of baltimore. most recently, we were there last summer to enjoy the 4th of july fireworks with friends over the harbor, near the domino sugar plant. i love how the harbor is such a strong and vital part of the city and the visual interest in this piece.
